The focal point of this concert is Tero Saarti, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s longstanding trumpet player. He has played for over 30 years in UMO, and his jazz playing is wonderfully lively and pulsating without ever being artificial or superficially technical. Saarti is an important solo powerhouse in UMO, and his trumpet and flugelhorn are really grooving.
For this concert programme, Saarti together with the conductor Mikko Hassinen has chosen his favourites of the vast production of the composer and trumpet player Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014).
– The album Music for Large & Small Ensembles from 1990 familiarised me with the tonal language of Wheeler’s jazz orchestra. I’ve always admired his way of composing also for small ensembles, says Saarti....

Tämän konsertin fokuksessa on UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestran pitkäaikainen trumpetisti Tero Saarti. UMOn riveissä tasan 30 vuoden ajan soittanut trumpetisti saa jazzin todella elämään ja sykkimään ilman keinotekoista, teknistä suorittamista. Saarti on UMOn tärkeä solistinen voima, jonka trumpetti ja flyygelitorvi yksinkertaisesti groovaavat.
Saarti on valinnut konsertin ohjelmistoon suosikkejaan säveltäjä-trumpetisti Kenny Wheelerin (1930–2014) laajasta tuotannosta yhteistyössä kapellimestari Mikko Hassisen kanssa.
– Albumi Music For Large & Small Ensembles vuodelta 1990 tutustutti minut Wheelerin jazzorkesterin sävelkieleen. Olen aina ihastellut hänen tapaansa säveltää myös pienyhtyeelle, Saarti kertoo.
Kyseiseltä levyltä poimittujen osien lisäksi konsertissa kuullaan Wheeleriltä mm. Mark Time, Gentle Piece ja For Jan.
HUOM! Enemmän irti esityksestä -keskustelutilaisuudet 45 min ennen keikkoja (Malmitalo 17:15, Vuotalo 13:15) konserttitalojen kahvioissa. Keskustelutilaisuus on maksuton konserttilipun ostaneille ja siinä taustoitetaan ohjelmistoa kapellimestari Mikko Hassisen ja solisti Tero Saartin johdolla.
