UMO Helsinki plays Dizzy Gillespie at Kanneltalo

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra pays homage to Dizzy Gillespie’s (1917–1993) vast musical heritage in this concert. The programme consists of the virtuoso trumpeter’s most famous compositions and best-loved jazz standards. The soloists of the evening are members of UMO Helsinki’s trumpet section and the orchestra is led by conductor Mikko Hassinen.

John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie is widely considered one of the very best jazz trumpeters of all times. He played a key role in the beginnings of jazz and bebop with his contemporaries Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In addition to being a virtuoso trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie is also regarded as a skilful big band composer and arranger. Most jazz lovers are familiar with his tunes Night in Tunisia, Manteca and Salt Peanuts.

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra kunnioittaa Dizzy Gillespien (1917–1993) valtavaa musiikillista perintöä konsertissa, jossa kuullaan kattava läpileikkaus virtuoositrumpetistin kuuluisimpia sävellyksiä ja hänelle tärkeitä jazzstandardeja. Kanneltalon iltakonsertin solisteina nähdään UMO Helsingin trumpettisektion soittajia, kapellimestarina toimii Mikko Hassinen.
Dizzy Gillespie vieraili UMOn solistina Helsingin Kulttuuritalolla vuonna 1982. Onnistuneen konsertin kruunasivat kehut, jotka Gillespie lausui lehdistötilaisuudessa: ”Tämä on paras orkesteri, jota olen vuosikausiin johtanut.”
John Birks ”Dizzy” Gillespietä pidetään yhtenä kaikkien aikojen parhaista jazztrumpetisteista, jolla oli myös varsin merkittävä rooli modernin jazzin ja bebopin synnyssä yhdessä aikalaistensa Charlie Parkerin, Miles Davisin ja John Coltranen  kanssa. Dizzy Gillespie tunnetaan virtuoosimaisen trumpetinsoiton lisäksi myös taitavana big band -säveltäjänä ja -sovittajana. Hänen kappaleensa Night in Tunisia, Manteca ja Salt Peanuts ovat tuttuja jazzin ystäville.
