Nikolai Panov – Guest Artist
with GPC Big Band conducted by Greg McClean 2012 Nikolai Panov performed his original compositions and arrangement of Russia classics.
His group “Four-Mation” just finished recording their new CD album. Nikolai’s performance at The Velvet Note will feature music from their CD, and you will be the first audience and the first critics of the album.
Nikolai Panov on tenor and soprano saxophones,
Mark Tucker on piano,
Steve Blair on acoustic bass,
Bill Norman on drums.
Nikolai met these musicians when he appeared as a guest artist for the GPC band, led by Greg McLean, one year ago and was impressed with their musicians’ sensitivity and musical approach. Nikolai’s idea was to make a whole program of original music in the style they all share. This, in turn, became the center of gravity which brought
them together. It was this energy that resulted in their shared dedication and in the new cd, “Cold Spring”.
The title tune of the CD – “Cold Spring” reflects a strange feeling, as all mankind, sometimes share: a cold and tragic feeling that casts a shadow into our souls. The set also includes Nikolai’s compositions: coltranish “Chasing That Spirit”, calypso like” Joy Jump”, tempo tune “Landing in Atlanta”, ballad “Serene Morning”, and a very special “The Hunt” originated from Tchaikovsky’s Seasons., Mark Tucker’s contribution includes: dramatic “Tango Nuevo”, bebop “Plausible Deniability”, and a lyrical waltz –ballad “The Ghost Of The Pumpkin Past”. Sound engineer who contributed a lot in this project- Lem Meador.
