Best-known for his work with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's versatility and highly developed technique as a soloist has made him a hugely in-demand session guitarist. Baxter isn't quite a household name, but his talent and taste have never been in question. Baxter landed his first recording gig in 1969 with the psychedelic pop group Ultimate Spinach. In 1972, he began his association with Steely Dan, playing on their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill. His ability to blend rock's visceral power with smooth, sophisticated jazz-pop made him an important element of the group, until Walter Becker became accomplished enough to handle the guitar leads himself.Following 1974's Pretzel Logic, Baxter moved on to the Doobie Brothers, debuting later that year on What Once Were Vices Are Now Habits and continuing on for several more albums through 1978; he also frequently doubled on steel guitar. The latest phase of Skunk came with his long time collaboration with keyboardist and producer CJ Vanston. The two had worked together on composing and producing commercials for years and decided that it was time to turn their combined creative skills to a music project. Working in CJ's studio, a wide range of songs were written and recorded representing the diversity of genres of music for which Skunk is known. They then decided that adding vocals, both from Baxter and guest artists would provide even more depth to the project. Former Doobie Brother band mate, Michael McDonald agreed to join and co-write a new song. Baxter and Vanston also worked with Jonny Lang and Clint Black to create new material. Baxter is excited to be touring with his new solo work. Baxter continues to be active as a performer, commentator, composer and producer.
