For decades, the Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio—the longest-serving free improvising jazz trio on the planet—went on tour every winter. In 2021, Alexander von Schlippenbach reassembled the trio:

Pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach is one of Europe’s leading bandleaders in the field of free improvisational music. He blends free and contemporary classical elements. Schlippenbach founded the Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966. After 1967, Schlippenbach led the trio with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens (see above), among others. In the late 1980s, he founded the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, which featured a number of European avant-garde jazz musicians such as Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Kenny Wheeler, Misha Mengelberg, and Aki Takase. In 1999, he began recording the complete works of Thelonious Monk with Rudi Mahall and his group Die Enttäuschung....

Schlippenbach received record awards from the Union of German Jazz Musicians (now: German Jazz Union, UDJ) (1980/81) and the Berlin Art Prize in 1976. In 1994, he was awarded the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize and in 2007 the SWR Jazz Prize. In 2017, he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2024, he was awarded the Berlin Jazz Prize and two German Jazz Prizes—for his life’s work and in the piano/keyboard instruments category.

Rudi Mahall has been one of the most sought-after bass clarinet players in Germany and Europe since the 1990s. In 2011, he won the SWR Jazz Prize. His quartet Die Enttäuschung was praised by Downbeat as “the best jazz combo of today.”

Schlippenbach has been playing in a duo with the excellent Norwegian drummer Dag Magnus Narvesen for several years.

The trio’s musical program consists of their own compositions and improvisations, as well as interpretations and arrangements of several pieces by Herbie Nichols, Thelonious Monk, and Eric Dolphy.
