On November 4th at 8PM in the Sadleir House Dining Hall, Trent University honours the memory and music of pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, one of the most endearing and original voices in 20th century music, born a century ago on October 17th. Our concert will feature music by and for Thelonious, including some of his most celebrated compositions, and tributes in music and words.

The concert will feature performances by musicians from Trent and the Peterborough jazz community. Trent prof Michael Morse will lead his New Dignity of Labour Ensemble, featuring some of Peterborough’s finest–not cops, though–including Marlowe Burke, trumpet, Kevin Cook, trombone, Andy Cragg and Steve McCracken, reeds, Saskia Tomkins, violin, Liam Morchese, bass, and Curtis Cronkwright, drums. Poet Ian McLachlan will join the ensemble for a poetry-music fusion entitled “Round Midnight (In the Hilton Ballroom),” written specially for the concert. The Trent University Jazz Band will play some numbers in Monk’s spirit, and we will feature internationally celebrated pianist Biff Hannon’s trio, featuring bassist Charles Mimeo and Curtis Cronkwright. Biff’s trio will be joined by acclaimed saxophonist Kevin Goss for some further exploration of Monk’s music in the quartet format Monk himself preferred, and possibly some special guests will join in....
