This concert is the result of a constant creative exchange between the jazz scenes of Berlin and Cologne, which has flourished and been in constant motion for many decades.

Since the CD releases on Pirouet and Klaeng, Bastian Stein has enjoyed a long-standing musical collaboration with Phil Donkin. In his trio with James Maddren, they have been developing together for many years a style of playing characterized by openness and intimate interaction: „The musical three-way relationship turns into an exciting affair from the very first note, because the three musicians elevate dense interplay to the lowest common denominator. Stein does not allow himself to be carried away for a moment by playing these offers of interaction with too many notes to circus-like flights of fancy. He uses the chance that this rhythm section offers him, gratefully picks up the balls, plays them back with a fragile tone, dashes forward with a radiant tone and again and again celebrates the high art of omission. The musical friendship between Donkin and Stein, which has been growing for many years, is enriched on this evening by the first meeting with Devin Gray and Matthew Halpin by further „notes“.

Devin Gray is an artist who is interested in a wide variety of musical currents and who strives for quality and sincerity in his work. His exceptionally energetic and fresh playing approach has propelled him in many different directions and projects, and has enabled him to play with „greats“ such as Chris Speed, Nate Wooley, Kris Davis, Drew Gress and many others.

Irish saxophonist Matthew Halpin, a Cologne native by choice for many years, completes the band with his fresh and unforced playing style. This musical free spirit with a warm sound and expressive tonal playing has often stood at Bastian’s side in recent years, from which their shared understanding of expression and sound has steadily evolved.
