The trio series the art of the trio has been a constant at LOFT for several years, and the CD box set with the recordings of the concerts has won many awards.
After a long break, the series is now getting off to a new start.
Hans Lüdemann, who recently returned from his one-year residency in Italy as a Villa Massimo Rome Prize winner for composition, has invited two young creative musicians: the drummer Savannah Harris from Brooklyn, who is known to Cologne audiences from the Cologne Jazzweek, and the US bassist Nick Dunston, who has recently moved to Berlin.
Both are creative minds and virtuosic, experimental players who, despite their young age, already have a wide range of experience as improvisers, instrumentalists and composers. There is plenty of room for this in the open trio concept, and these impulses are readily taken up by the trio’s pianist.
Hans Lüdemann, for his part, brings both the diverse experiences from past encounters of the art of the trio as well as new ideas and compositions, which he realises on LOFT’s own Steinway D and with the microtonal extensions of his virtual piano.
This trio is all about moving the music, themselves as musicians and the listeners, staying in motion and trying out one or two new moves. For Hans Lüdemann it also means a return to his own North American roots from the years as an exchange student in Los Angeles, student in Banff/Canada and visiting professor in Philadelphia, and to projects with Muhal Richard Abrams, Paul Bley, Mark Feldman, Hank Roberts, Bobby Previte, Mark Helias, Gerald Cleaver and Bobby Zankel.
