Pientka masters this challenge with reverence and a good portion of self-confidence. His compositions glide between jazz and classical music, touching on border areas and finding unexpected common ground. With a tentet, i.e. a real „large ensemble“, moving in the unstressed waters between classical and jazz, the great deeds of arranger Gil Evans inevitably come to mind. Pientka’s compositions take up this spirit, but sound fresh, lively and close to the spirit of the times, despite all awareness of tradition. Snappy bebop passages, anthemic film music borrowings, demanding modern jazz, grooving pop and driving acoustic techno unite in ecstasy and depth in the pieces of the young musician.

For all their compositional density and obsession with detail, Pientka’s compositions remain one thing above all – human. Just as human as those questions that Goethe had his Faust ask and that remain unanswered to this day. If unanswered questions sound like the compositional density, musical opulence and improvisational flights of fancy of Andreas Pientka and his tentet, then we should start asking more of them from now on.
