On December 28, 2024, Barre Phillips passed away at the age of 90 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Phillips, who is considered one of the most influential, if not the most important double bassist of modern creative and contemporary improvisational music, leaves behind a remarkable oeuvre that will have a lasting influence on future generations of improvisers. Phillips moved to New York in 1962 after studying Romance studies at Berkeley University. There he took double bass lessons with Frederick Zimmermann and performed in Gunther Schullerβs Third Stream project with Eric Dolphy at Carnegie Hall in 1963. He also recorded a concerto by Larry Austin with the New York Philharmonic as a soloist under Leonard Bernstein. From 1964, he was a member of Jimmy Giuffreβs trio and toured Europe for the first time with George Russellβs sextet. He also worked with Attila Zoller and Archie Shepp until 1967....
