Gerald Clayton’s father John is well known in Cologne. The African-American bassist, composer and arranger has often been invited by the WDR Big Band when the renowned radio jazz orchestra needed to swing as authentically as the veterans of jazz from the USA.
Gerald Clayton was born in Utrecht, Holland, in 1984, when his father was employed as a bassist with the Amsterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. However, Clayton grew up on the American West Coast near Los Angeles. He began learning classical piano as a child, later switching to jazz piano. He studied jazz piano at both the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles with Billy Child and at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York with Kenny Barron.

Even during that time, he was a pianist in his father’s various groups – such as the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra and the family band The Clayton Brothers. Since 2013, Clayton has worked with saxophonist Charles Lloyd and played regularly with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who passed away in 2018. As a pianist, he has developed his own harmonic signature to wander sure-footedly through the borderlands of jazz tradition and modernity.
„All of his pieces have a lyrical and ethereal approach and are elusive, supple, light-footed, Zen-like, highly articulate and so mesmerizing that they draw you in and embrace your soul,“ critic Michael Nastos wrote of Clayton. In the meantime, Clayton releases his albums on Blue Note Records, most recently Bells And Sands, on which he dealt with the Catalan composer Federico Mompou, among others.
