Sachse has never denied the influence of this legendary African-American rock guitarist on his own guitar playing. But the similarities are less to be found in sound or phrasing than in the way Sachse makes the form and structure of plain songs the basis of his improvisational art.
Even in the 1970s, when he was part of the first guard of DDR jazz, his music never sounded as freely tonal as that of many of his colleagues. Nevertheless, Sachse worked with saxophonist Manfred Schulze, among others, or could be heard in a duo with his instrumental colleague Uwe Kropinski, which became the quartet Doppelmoppel with the addition of the two trombone-playing brothers Hannes and Conny Bauer. At the Cologne Jazzweek Sachse will be joined by alto saxophonist Manfred Hering, tenor saxophonist Helmut Forsthoff and bass clarinetist Heiner Reinhardt, with whom the guitarist has worked closely since the 1970s.
