Michiyo Yagi, born in Tokoname, Japan, began playing the Japanese vaulting board zither koto at the age of six, later deepening her studies with Tadao Sawai, Kazue Sawai and Satomi Kurauchi. As a visiting professor at American Wesleyan University, she experimented with compositions by John Cage and John Zorn, at the same time she began to develop improvisational concepts for her 13-string instrument. Since then she has worked with musicians as diverse as Peter Brötzmann, Joëlle Léandre, Keiji Heino and Zeena Parkins....

DJ and producer Jan Bang is one of the curators for the Punkt Festival in Kirstiansand, south of the Norwegian capital Oslo, which takes place annually in September with its unusual concept of remixing in „real time“. In 2007, Bang invited Japanese koto player Michiyo Yagi to play a solo concert at the Punkt Festival. Over the years, the Japanese and Norwegian collaborations have continued, culminating in a commissioned composition from the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, New York in 2022. „Through A Looking Glass“ has become an audiovisual program in which the atmospheric imagery is congruent with Yagi and Bang’s diverse, multi-stylistic music that shifts between ambient and soundscapes.

In the 2nd set with Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset and Australian drummer Tony Buck together. Aarset is an expert on his instrument, who makes complex rhythms groove as well as weaves the long lying notes of the guitar into artful soundscapes, while Buck likes to build a bridge on the drums between, for example, US-style hardbop, art rock and minimal music.
