DRA is a unique contemporary music research ensemble that focuses on the exploration of rhythm. In the 25 years of their work, DRA has created a significant body of work that has been intensively discussed in the music world. In 1998, Christopher Dell (vibraphone, composition), Christian Ramond (bass), and Felix Astor (percussion) began to develop a completely independent way of working. This work consists of so-called programs, which in turn are composed of individual works.
Three existing programs reflect a continuous process whose method consists of combining multiple musical logics, experiences, and practices. Operationally, the process focuses on creating matrices that allow for the ongoing exploration of new possibilities for performative connections between musical structures. Over the years, this kind of thinking in structures has given rise to a unique experimental system. Its matrix works in two directions: on the one hand, DRA's structural sets provoke the permanent expansion of their own playing practice. On the other hand, the ensemble's performance experience influences the opening up of compositional structures. In this sense, surprising metric modulation, delicate ramifications, fascinating rhythmic overlays, and intense embodiment are the keywords when it comes to the form and content of DRA's work.
