That Mariá Portugal meets Fred Frith on this evening is a great fortune, because if the contemporary music of Europe has produced a truly legendary and globally significant figure in that exciting area where all stylistic boundaries are in question, it is probably the guitarist Fred Frith. His beginnings with the art-rock trio Henry Cow are music history, and later collaborations – from Brian Eno and Mike Oldfield, which were followed by joint projects with John Zorn and Bill Laswell, to Lotte Anker, Zeena Parkins, Laurie Anderson and beyond – show him always inwardly confident of style and free of any fear of contact with his environment.
