The result is music with a calm basic gesture. The emotional dimension of Gershwin’s work and the story told in Porgy & Bess is particularly important here – that the pieces make something vibrate, get close to you, touch you. “That’s exactly what you feel in every moment of this music. The wonderfully intimate duo moves freely within the material. Sometimes themes and harmonies only appear briefly. Nevertheless, the connection to the core is always there. One of the many qualities of this album is Winterschladen’s narrative playing on trumpet and flugelhorn, his narrative tone… This voice and Lüdemann’s sensitively associative piano playing complement each other to create an all-round coherent, completely unique Porgy and Bess homage.” Arne Schuhmacher

Winterschladen and Lüdemann got to know each other through a joint performance at the Moers Festival in 1995 and subsequently worked together in Hans Lüdemann’s group RISM. This can be heard on Futurism (double CD, released by JazzHausMusik). They presented their duo program for the first time in spring 2000 on a tour of Germany. The duo’s first CD, Mysterious Call, was released in 2001, followed by further concerts, including one in West Africa in 2008 on behalf of the Goethe-Institut. After a joint production with the NDR Bigband in 2011, the second CD Heavy Hearts was released by NRW Records in 2013. Both musicians can also be heard on the CD Desert Pulse by Trio Ivoire, released in 2017. With Porgy’s Dream, their third duo album released in 2024, they have opened up a new world of sound.
