The idea of Marcin and myself playing Johann Sebastian Bach came a few years ago from Wim Wabbes of Handelsbeurs, Gent. Marcin Masecki, a master pianist and one of my idols, is recognised for his personal and radical interpretations of classical repertoire. My first meeting with his music was his renditions of Scarlatti pieces. It was definitely the first time I felt using classical repertoire as a base for improvisation made sense to me.

Marcin and I premiered as a duo in September 2020 during my residency at Au Topsi Pohl in Berlin, solely improvising. In the mini residency in Loft Koln, we want to combine and intertwine the music of J.S.Bach with improvisation. The repertoire we will be working with is Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C-minor (BWV 1060), Four Duets (BWV 802-805), some of the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), and two of Kurtag’s transcriptions of Bach’s orchestral works (BWV 106 and 643).

I have been playing Bach’s pieces since I can recall, yet I have never performed his music publicly. From my personal perspective, this will be a premiere in many respects and I am as scared as I am excited about it.
