The pianist presents his new quartet for his master’s degree:
Leon Hattori (Cologne, D) and Eliott Knuets (Brussels, B) got to know and appreciate each other musically in spring 2022 during the album production of the Florian Ross Octet (Tunes & Explorations / Toy Piano Records) in Cologne. This experience inspired them to form their own ensemble.
The original compositions performed here by Knuets and Hattori are inspired by the quartets of their role models Kurt Rosenwinkel, Aaron Parks and Lage Lund. In 2023, the two young musicians already had the opportunity to make music together with their role models: While Knuets – as a resident artist at the Leuven Jazz Festival 2023 – brought his own compositions to the stage with Aaron Parks, Hattori – as a scholarship holder of the Gutenberg Jazz Collective Mainz, among others – was able to play concerts with Lage Lund twice. The experience gained from this forms the basis for the joint work of this band and the design of the program....

Hattori and Knuets will be supported by two of the pianist’s musical companions from their time studying together at the Cologne University of Music and Dance: bassist Nico Klöffer and drummer Simon Bräumer. Klöffer has already performed with Lage Lund as part of the Jonas & Jaki concert series (with drummer Jonas Burgwinkel and Leon Hattori), while Bräumer can be heard with his entire musical range as a sideman in a wide variety of projects.
