The Maxtubes project by the three multi-instrumentalists Claudio Puntin, Falk Grieffenhagen and Thomas Savy combines both their love of low clarinets and their speciality of improvisation. The programme, developed from their own ranks, highlights the instruments normally used in the lower register of orchestral and big band movements as solo instruments. Thanks to their experience as improvisers, composers and virtuosos, they make full use of the frequency range of their instruments, which have the widest range of all wind instruments. Paris-based Thomas Savy studied both jazz and classical music as a clarinettist and saxophonist and is an integral part of the jazz and contemporary music scene in Paris. He often works as a tenor saxophonist in big bands, but when he works as a bandleader and composer, the musician known as the ‘Selmer Paris Artist’ devotes himself exclusively to the bass clarinet.

Swiss-born clarinettist and composer Claudio Puntin is one of the most internationally renowned musicians in his field. As a composer and soloist, he works with classical orchestras and choirs as well as big bands and contemporary music ensembles. In addition to his work as a composer and producer for film and radio play music, he also conducts intensive research in the field of contemporary electronic music. As a trained glod smith, he is now also successfully involved in instrument making.

Falk Grieffenhagen, instrumental musician, media computer scientist and performer, studied both sound engineering and jazz with saxophone and clarinet as his main instruments in Düsseldorf and Cologne. Since 1996 he has been a freelance artist performing worldwide in the fields of jazz, new music, electronics and media art. As a composer, he works in the fields of film music and radio plays as well as for his own ensembles. He is also a successful live electronics engineer and software developer for music and media art.
