With the founding of Tonwerkstatt, the Cologne saxophonist and composer Moritz von Kleist realized his enthusiasm for free jazz music based on individual playing. From the very beginning, the overarching idea of this band was to abolish the boundary between harmony and melody as independent, structuring elements of musical form. The independent harmonic interplay of four virtuoso instrumentalists takes its place.

Alongside band leader Moritz von Kleist, the music is characterized by the characteristic playing of trumpeter Ryan Carniaux. He is a professor at the Folkwang University in Essen and a member of countless bands. Bassist Reza Askari plays as a sideman with Lee Konitz and Hayden Chisholm, among others. Nils Tegen has played as a drummer and pianist in almost every major concert hall in the world. He works with Bob Mintzer, Wende Snijders, Tocotronic and Michel Pilz.

The deliberate renunciation of an instrument in the instrumentation, which is mainly concentrated on harmonic tasks, allows all transitions to become fluid. Interlocking voices interweave here to form surfaces that always remain flexible in their form and can overlap with other, quite repetitive structural elements. In this basic concept, the Tonwerkstatt shows itself to be a close relative of the visual arts, where several means are always effective simultaneously with color, form or technique and can also flexibly play out their meaning between figuration and abstraction.
