Once again Pablo Held presents an entirely „impossible quintet“: this time the pianist has invited four musical personalities from different generations and with musically quite different temperaments and (life) experiences, who admittedly have one thing in common: They all trust the curiosity, openness and respect of their host, who literally brings them into play with each other and lets them act together.

Especially the US-American saxophonist, singer and all-round artist Ned Ferm stands for wide ways of playing and sound, textures and moods. Charming and virtuosic, deeply relaxed and unpretentious, he creates sound worlds of subtle beauty and promises melodic high pleasure: a cool „rider“ between folkloristic Western sound and Scandinavian sound spheres. One of his most beautiful pieces is called „Down and Forward“, which also stands for profound and courageous in perspective. The Stuttgart trombonist Carlotta Armbruster won the Deutschlandfunk studio prize in May as a duo with drummer Jonas Heck as part of the German Music Council’s jazz promotion project. Now she meets the sometimes almost Mediterranean temperament of Roberto Gatto, probably Italy’s most popular straight-ahead drummer at the moment, who has played with almost all the world’s jazz greats. No less experienced is the brilliant bassist Christian Ramond, who has been part of the Cologne jazz scene for many years – he, too, is always a garnish for stylistic sound adventures, as this concert evening promises in abundance.
