For over 25 years, Simon Nabatov has repeatedly returned to one of the main themes of his work: composing and realizing projects linked to literature, whether purely instrumental or with sung or spoken texts.

Writing the chamber opera Sylvia was the next logical step: a composition with a libretto, a continuous plot, defined characters, an evolving dramaturgy, and scenic elements.
In his search for literary material, Nabatov chose a story that had interested and fascinated him for years: the relationship between the brilliant poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, who shared a magically powerful passion and immense talent, but at the same time tormented each other emotionally until Sylvia Plath took her own life....

The music is performed by a top-class chamber music ensemble, complemented by live electronics and video projection. The two singers also take on the roles of Sylvia’s mother, father, and Sylvia’s main rival, Assia Wevill.

Beyond the tragic aspects, Nabatov also wants to celebrate the creativity and lasting legacy of two extraordinary authors who left an indelible mark on the literary world.
