In Werner Neumann’s current trio „wenet“ with organist Steffen Greisiger and drummer Tom Friedrich from the next generation, this ripped-off understatement comes wonderfully to the fore. Everything retains its sly casualness and doesn’t forget the humor. This band has far too many ideas to have to trot out individual flashes of inspiration. Their music is fun, fusing tradition and departure, America and Europe, jazz and rock, staying true to itself as they lay their tracks full of feints, letting one piece emerge from the other. This results in a multi-faceted album as if from a single mold, indulgent and loose, dreamy and attacking, disciplined and spontaneous, traditional and modern, subtle and compact. It quotes Radiohead and Stravinsky, folk song and campfire guitar, lets Jon Lord, Billy Preston and Jimmy Smith appear and yet doesn’t pant after the predecessors....
