Since this year’s concert in the middle of the corona pandemic cannot take place in the usual form, we make a virtue of necessity: one concert turns into three – live and streamed for three consecutive weeks in the home towns of the musicians from Cologne (3.6.), Karlsruhe (10.6.) and Indianapolis (17.6.).
At 7 p.m. CEST we present one-hour concerts – with favorite pieces from the respective trios and musical references to the jazz scene in Indianapolis.

Ursula Martyn-Ellis attended the “preparatory study jazz” with André Nendza in 2012 and in 2013 – already as a student of jazz guitar in Osnabrück – traveled to Indianapolis as part of the anniversary of the twinning partnership with Cologne as part of a jazz exchange with the USA. In the meantime Marytyn-Ellis works professionally as a guitarist, songwriter and singer and so it is exciting to hear this clearly mature artist again in a concert with an Indy connection.

Peter Baumgärtner, on the other hand, would have been heard this summer for the first time at the now annual jazz concert series „Indianapolis meets Cologne“ in the Altes Pfandhaus „at the planned „The Music of Oliver Nelson Project „. Baumgärtner is a well-established drummer who, in addition to a solid time, is always sensitive to sound.

Bassist and composer André Nendza has been involved in the jazz exchange between the partner cities both musically and organizationally since 2013. In collaboration with the pianist Monika Herzig from Bloomington, so many wonderful concert moments were created.

The trio’s repertoire oscillates between songs, folklore and jazz with their own song-like compositions by Marytyn-Ellis, Nendza and Baumgärtner and three jazz classics with Indianapolis reference.

J.J. Johnson’s „Lament“, „Cole Porter’s“ Everytime we say goodbye „and Wes Montgomery’s“ Sundown ”reflect different facets of the wonderful music scene in Indy …
