When Tunisian oud virtuoso Fadhel Boubaker plays jazz harmonies, complex rhythms and even pieces by contemporary jazz composers such as Pat Metheny, a musical tradition that is thousands of years old merges with the music of our present day.
MAjÄL (مجال), pronounced [maʒaːl], mainly plays original compositions inspired by modern jazz, odd metres, maqam music and Arabic songs from the 1950s. The sound of the Arabic lute characterises MAjÄL’s music. Together with electric guitar and percussion, a filigree network of moving rhythms, strong melodies and jazz harmonies is created. Time and again, the three musicians change roles and improvise both within and outside their compositions, resulting in expressive music full of groove and emotion....
