The Pablo Held Meets concert series at the LOFT is the symbiotic relationship between a constantly searching jazz pianist who is equally enthusiastic about people and music and a venue that is no less inspiring.
Since 2017, Pablo Held has been curating his concert series, to which he invites musicians who inspire him. Without his invitation, they might never have come together; in fact, they usually meet for the first time. Grand piano, harp, double bass: It is easy to imagine the unquestionably seductive sound of these string instruments together β without being even halfway prepared for what these three sound virtuosos will create in open, equal cooperation. For the highly exciting trio summit meeting with an open outcome, Pablo Held has asked two confidants.
He has been friends with Kathrin Pechlof since she came to Cologne in 2008, they have met in various formations, Kathrin Pechlof also played on Pablo Heldβs album βGlowβ. Actually, he says, there is no model for what she plays: βKathrin is a true music pioneer!β So the title of her album with Christian Weidner and Robert Landfermann is programmatic: βToward the Unknown.β The harpist, improviser and composer studied jazz composition at the Hochschule fΓΌr Musik und Tanz with Joachim Ullrich and Frank Gratkowski. She incorporates the sound of her harp into the contemporary improvisational context as courageously as creatively, as fragilely as gracefully, as powerfully as expressively.
SkΓΊli Sverrisson played with his band Seria at the KLAENG Festival in 2019, Pablo Held felt reminded of all that he himself loves about music. The Icelandic bassist and film composer has worked in a variety of genres, including with Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, and Bill Frisell. With JΓ³han JΓ³hannson and Ryuichi Sakamoto, he developed the music for films such as βSicarioβ and βThe Revenant.β Of his Ensemble Seria, All About Jazz wrote: βA quiet terrain that conjures up decidedly powerful images.β
