For a long time Ballard played in Brad Mehldau’s trio (with Larry Grenadier), and he also worked with Avishai Cohen and Chick Corea. In his own trios with Mark Turner/Larry Grenadier and Lionel Loueke/Miguel Zenón, the harmonically amazing ideas bubble up with a similar intensity – and the impressive interaction with Robert Landfermann in Jorge Rossy’s trio sometimes takes off into the magical....

With „Fairgrounds,“ Ballard widened his view to rock, pop, electronica and African music, which should make him an exciting partner for trumpeter Hermon Mehari from Kansas City. Alongside this soft-toned, eloquent storyteller with musical roots in the African diaspora is Alden Hellmuth: The young alto saxophonist from the New York scene is currently studying at the Musik Akademie Basel – a self-confident, wholly unpretentious musician, well-versed in diverse jazz and bebop traditions.

With Tyrolean bassist Matthias Pichler, who came to New York 18 years ago thanks to the Hans Koller Award and was named „Sideman of the Year“ there in 2006, Pablo Held completes his (almost) American quintet, with which he has once again scored a special coup.
