Based on the intensive work with the Jazzpool NRW and with many young musicians from NRW, Peter Weiss released the CD The Good View in 2015. The underlying idea of this CD, which already points ahead to the concept explained below, was, among other things, to present the wide range of talents – and in this respect the future of jazz and improvised music – in an exemplary way and to make it accessible to a broader public. The quintet was formed at the beginning of 2017 as a result of this idea, this joint – quasi cross-generational – work with young musicians on the CD and the reactions of fellow musicians, jazz enthusiasts and jazz critics, and since then has also been appearing with growing success nationwide. The ensemble is clearly characterised by the wide-ranging possibilities of its members, in which the most diverse traditions of this music, jazz, are reflected.

Ryan Carniaux embodies the American tradition on the one hand, but is also committed to the European free scene in his playing style (member of the Globe Unity Orchestra). Sebastian Sternal – with a broad classical background – not only has an outstanding ‚craft‘ to show, but also shines through his genre-spanning composition work. Together with the two instrumentalists, he forms a combination that is still not very common or widespread: Kristina Brodersen, a master student of Lee Konitz with a rather melodically abstract orientation, is outstanding above all in the area of harmonics. Bassist Hendrika Entzian, for her part, has more of an affinity for form and arrangement and was recently awarded a jazz prize for composition and arrangement. Together with the stylistically broad and long-standing experience of band leader Peter Weiss, a thoroughly unusual ensemble has been formed here, which stands out not least because of the participation of two female musicians.

In this formation, a number of very different ways of seeing and playing have come together to form an unusual – not only cross-generational but also cross-gender – ensemble, and so, through the will to communicate closely and the willingness to cooperate, an ensemble idea of its own has increasingly formed in the sense mentioned above.
