When she was 15, Luise Volkmann was part of the smallest autonomous centre in Germany: the JZO Oerlinghausen. The punks offered the only interesting cultural work in the Lippe countryside: they organised concerts, theme evenings and poetry slams. Music was at the centre of the community as an expression of an attitude to life and political convictions – music with a rousing urgency.
Volkmann has always felt that punk and free jazz are related. In urgency, political statement and the social trappings of the music. This is how her new punk jazz project with Fanny Lasfargues (bass), Oliver Steidle (drums) and Alwin Weber (electronics) came about. In this energetic repertoire, the musicians play noise toys in addition to their instruments. These instruments, soldered by Dresden electronic artist Alwin Weber, bring the necessary DIY sound (Do It Yourself) of the punks into the instrumental jazz world....
