In this new line-up, Cologne based pianist Jan Lukas Roßmüller plays his compositions with Florian Herzog on double bass and Jakob Görris on drums. The band is characterized by liveliness and a playful approach to form. Influences are contemporary beat-influenced jazz and free improvised music. The boundaries between compositions and improvisational openness fade. The band develops small composed elements, that remain audible within the improvisation.

“My music must always have a great free moment.” With this urgency, Cologne-based pianist and composer Jan Lukas Roßmüller is part of a young, forward-looking movement between contemporary jazz and free improvisation – uncompromising and open. His influences include jazz icons such as Thelonious Monk or Carla and Paul Bley as well as contemporary piano music and electronic music.

With the electronic duo Book of Ra (debut album 2021 on Unit Records), he creates “digital funk parks” (WDR). His compositions were also recently heard in the trio Erdung, a piano trio “peppered with abstraction and grounded in the tradition of the format” (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik). With the band RGR, he plays freely improvised music with “new coordinates for the age-old theme of beauty” (Wolf Kampmann, Jazzthetik). The debut album Octopetala was created as part of the recording project prize initiated by LOFT / 2ndFLOOR e. V. and was released in March 2024 by Boomslang Records.

Jan Lukas Roßmüller was part of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Musik Now e. V. sponsorship program during his studies at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and was awarded the Osnabrück Study Up Award, the Domicil Dortmund sponsorship prize and the LOFT recording project in Cologne, among others. After participating in the concerto21 academy, he was a resident scholarship holder at the Alfred Toepfer Foundation’s Elbehaus in Hamburg in spring 2024.
