The trio ROOMS is a revelation – according to the French magazine Jazzman.
It opens up new perspectives, takes pleasure in creating free spaces and embarks on musical journeys of discovery. Hans Lüdemann, the German piano virtuoso on the grand piano and „virtual piano“, Sebastien Boisseau, the French bass improviser and drummer Dejan Terzic, the German sound artist with roots in the Balkans, first came together as a trio in 2007 as part of the now legendary concert series die kunst des trios at the LOFT in Cologne
In 2009, this became a permanent formation, and since 2013 ROOMS has also been the basis for the Franco-German „TransEuropeExpress-Ensemble“.
T.E.E.’s new albums „on the edges 2 & 3“ were released at the end of 2023 and it is time to return to the starting point as a trio. With the concert at LOFT, the trio wants to open up new spaces again.
From the very first note, this trio has found its own sound and a magical understanding from which an effortless flow of musical ideas develops. These can be an immersion in the individual note, but they can also be eruptive and very dynamic.
The trio swings and is deeply rooted in jazz, but takes the space to steer the music in unexpected directions at any time. The musical approach is open, demonstrates a broad horizon and easily transcends conventional genre boundaries. It integrates influences from rock music and the electronic extensions of the grand piano sound with the „virtual piano“ invented by Lüdemann, which contributes to the trio’s unique sound. The result is rich in contrasts and tension, lively and absolutely contemporary. There are no quotations or postmodern arbitrariness, but Hans Lüdemann’s compositions provide a unifying and expressive personal musical language on the basis of which the musicians find great freedom in improvisation.
The trio can be heard on two trio albums, the award-winning CD box set „die kunst des trios“ and four albums with the TransEuropeExpress. In 2021, Hans Lüdemann received the German Rome Prize from the Villa Massimo and the last album „on the edges 3“ was created and recorded during his stay in Rome in 2022.
“Hans Lüdemann is so damn expressive with a melody, and yet his music has such a relaxed ambiance to it that it hardly seems like he’s even trying. That dichotomy, and the fascinating contrast it puts front and center of every piece, is a big reason his music resonates like mad. …. On his newest release “Blaue Kreise”, it’s a more conventional combo with his ROOMS outfit of bassist Sébastien Boisseau and drummer Dejan Terzic, but the huge expressiveness makes its presence felt with no less force. This is true on the introspective “Dark Lights” and the rough-and-tumble of title-track “Blaue Kreise” and the glittering light show of “Arabesque” and the wild celebration of “Spring Rites,” and there isn’t a moment that isn’t crackling with life, as if every note might be their last.”
