Volker Goetze is a composer, filmmaker and musician. His time in West Africa inspired him to make a documentary film about the oral history of West Africa and to expand it into a live video performance documentary recounting the origins of the African harp. His trumpet-kora duo crosses both geographic and musical boundaries, resulting in a unique musical synthesis that fuses the timeless tradition of the storyteller/griot with a modern perspective, embarking on a spiritual sonic journey that ranges from the desert to the coast of West Africa to the urban landscapes of New York, addressing our ancient spiritual roots and our hurried, dehumanized modern lives. These recordings received top honors as Best World Music Release from Public Radio International and reached #1 on iTunes (World Music Album). This makes him a specialist in working with folklore cultures creating new narratives and bringing them into the 21st century. In 2017, Volker Goetze composed a VR work about the New York City mass grave on Hart Island called „Unique Places of Death NYC“. In 2018 he implemented his vision of New York’s first sound sculpture walk „Sonic Gates“ which prompted the „NYC Department of Culture Affairs“ to double funding for local artists. He is currently working on a Community VR dance, poetry and music performance about indigenous homelessness and genocide, celebrating white cultural identity with the goal of overcoming historical trauma: „Wall of Forgottgen Natives“ was created through a grant from the McKnight Fundation of the American Composer Forum.
Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko is a Senegalese kora player who is said to have been born „with the kora in his hands“. A native of Dakar, Senegal, he is a nephew of the king of the kora: Soundioulou Cissokho. His magical kora playing and singing do not fail to attract renowned jazz musicians with whom he will frequently collaborate, including: Doudou Gouirand, the Belmondo brothers, Tony Allen, Piers Faccini, Trilok Gurtu, Manu Dibango , New Cool Collective Jazz Band from Amsterdam, Erif Truffaz, to name a few. Albums testify to these experiences with Doudou Gouirand, especially Trilok Gurtu. Other albums in other musical genres are added and concretize his participation alongside Alama Kanté, Omar Sosa, Diogal, Fania, Julien Baer, as well as the musical „Kirikou and Karaba“ with Youssou N’dour, Angélique Kijo, Tété, for which he co-composed. Ali Boulo Santo is known for his innovative kora style as well as his creativity in combining Mandingo music with Senegalese and Western influences. In all discretion, this insatiable artist consolidates this bridge between Africa and the West, optimizing this duality that he represents, crossroads between cultures and world music, with humanity, sincerity and respect, remaining always faithful to him.
