The Counterfictionals is a sextet from Copenhagen, for those who love the films of David Lynch, Jane Campion, Sergio Leone, Wes Anderson and the A24 universe.
Every composition is inspired by a scene in a film they love. They share their thoughts about the film and the films theme, as part of their performance of the songs.
There are songs about death, rebirth, decay, blood, sudden realisations and unexpected love. The stories are told through distorted guitars and meticulously crafted arrangements for glockenspiel, viola, and theremin. Ethiopian-inspired patterns on muted piano, kalimba and jaw harp. There are haunting motifs on flute and bass clarinet, and there are samples from cult films and compositions that transport you to half-forgotten corners of your memory....

Their first album, No Hay Banda, was released in 2019 to glowing international reviews and was nominated for Best Jazz Album of the Year at the Danish Music Awards.
The Counterfictionals is made up of three women and three men from the forefront of the Danish jazz, rock, and theatre music scenes.
This second album, โAn incomplete encyclopedia of gentle emotionsโ will be released June 13. on vinyl, CD and streaming platforms. The album consists of these 5 pieces:
Poems and Rain (8 minutes and 30 seconds)
Poems and Rain is the opening theme for an imaginary movie starring Timothรฉe Chalamet as the young, melancholic poet and Tilda Swinton as โThe God of Rainโ. Itโs poetic, grand, calm and captivating - featuring theremin, strings, bass trombone, mellotron and tubular bells. Youthful poetic yearning and dreams of grandeur, recalled many years later.
Norm Gunderson's 3-cent Stamp (9 minutes and 5 seconds)
This tune celebrates the most beautiful love story we know: Marge and Norm from "Fargo" - the wonderful film by the Coen brothers. A calm, warm and enduring love that we interpret through a beautiful Nordic melody supported by a warm and pulsating afrobeat. Intricate guitar and kalimba figures topped with deep piano tones and woodwinds. A track designed to support and uplift you, just as Marge and Norm support and uplift each other. Calm love from The Counterfictionals to you.
Beatrix and Bill (8 minutes and 26 seconds)
Beatrix and Bill is inspired by a Quentin Tarantino movie. Before Beatrix killed Bill, she loved him. Before there was violence, there was love โ and within the love, there was violence. In this track, the guitar is tuned down, the tempo has almost come to a halt, and the melodica is distorted, evoking memories of old Sergio Leone movies.
Puppet (7 minutes and 8 seconds)
In Puppet, we draw inspiration from Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonzeโs masterpiece Being John Malkovich. Craig and Lotte feel like theyโve lost control - that something is fundamentally wrong. We build the piece slowly, with muted piano, glockenspiel and theremin, taking a detour into a mysterious theme on alto flute and bass clarinet, and ending with a passionate solo on alto saxophone. A track for listeners who feel worried and need to feel seen and - perhaps โ understood.
The White Lodge (5 minutes and 11 seconds)
The White Lodge dives into the mystery of David Lynchโs and Mark Frostโs TV series Twin Peaks and the Cthulhu mythology from H.P. Lovecraftโs stories. The impenetrable forest. The undefined terror. We step into the dread with a long, calm melody played by alto flute, bass clarinet, vibraphone and piano. Searching for footing. Letting the darkness envelop us. A long, detailed string arrangement finally leaves us with some form of resolution. Perhaps a new understanding.
