Brilliant trombonist but also conche blower… Ray Charles before joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and then Steve Turre worked with Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, JJ Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, Max Roach and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduces him to the shell as a musical instrument. Later, during a tour in Mexico, parents inform him that his ancestors played the shell... Since then, he has integrated it into his musical style...
