The new trio version of Steve Smith and Vital Information is with Manuel Valera, a Guggenheim Fellow and Grammy nominated artist, on piano and synths and Janek Gwizdala on electric bass. Although the band is rooted in the straight-ahead swing of bebop, at times they explore exotic time-signatures from the world of South Indian Carnatic music and they have also arranged some adventurous funk-driven renditions of jazz standards. Steve Smith formed his Vital information band 40 years ago. To commemorate this anniversary, Wounded Bird Records will be releasing this year The Complete Columbia Recordings, a CD set of the first four Vital Information albums. From 2016-2019 he toured with the iconic rock band Journey, the group in which he recorded nine albums with massive hits. Smith has won numerous Modern Drummer Readers Polls and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There will be a new album release with this line-up prior to the June 2023 tour.
