A welcome return for Tom Cawley’s Curios, one of the most successful and acclaimed jazz acts in the UK. After a long break, during which Tom has toured internationally with Peter Gabriel’s ‘New Blood’ orchestral project, the band have returned with a brand new album, their first in five years.

Tom first came to the jazz world’s attention in Acoustic Ladyland, but has more recently devoted himself to exploring the possibilities of the jazz trio. Curios have won numerous awards over the past few years. Tom’s music is always bursting with ideas, and the trio bears comparison with world-class practitioners of this intricate and intimate kind of jazz.

With three acclaimed albums (Hidden, Closer and The Other Place) behind them, Curios are building an impressive and evolving catalogue of music. The album was recorded at Real World studios and premiered at Bowers & Wilkins’ Society of Sound, emphasising the high quality of the recording. The music continues to build on some of the developments first heard on the band’s third album, The Other Place, with greater use of electronics and varied textures to accompany Cawley’s characteristically romantic and thoughtful themes.

Curios are winners in the Best Band category of the BBC Jazz Awards and have performed in the UK and Europe, including at Brecon Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and at Ronnie Scott’s in London. The band is highly respected as a live act.

As well as performing and writing, Tom Cawley plays an important role in jazz education, holding a professorship in jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music.
