About

Bass player Peter Ind’s playing is universally admired and respected throughout the international jazz world. One of the most charismatic musicians on the scene today Peter emigrated to the USA in the early 50’s where his phenomenal technique and impressive musical ability honed by his studies with the iconic pianist Lennie Tristano, led to work with jazz greats such as Lee Konitz, Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holiday. He returned to the UK in the mid 60’s where he established himself as a performer and teacher of great distinction, adding a record label (Wave) to his achievements and then, in the mid 1980’s, opening the internationally renowned “Bass Clef” Jazz Club in London, which he ran for more than 10 years. Now at over eighty years of age, Peter is still playing as brilliantly as ever and is with great pleasure we welcome this iconic figure to the Club. The music will be a mix of the established and the new, with contributions from his wide-ranging musical friends in various combinations from duos to quintets, including ex-pat US jazz drummer Rod Youngs, Middle-Eastern-influenced Oud player Yaz Fantazi, a Caribbean inspired set and a Latin/Brazilian set featuring flute player Steve Rubie. And if all that wasn’t enough you can expect at least one great singer (if not more) to drop by to join in the fun, not forgetting a grand finale that will see a “choir” of bass players on the stand drawn from some of the best players from one of Peter’s most recent workshops. A true polymath and iconoclast, Peter will not only be playing but also discussing his lengthy and fascinating career and his approach to both music and life. As well as a world-class musician Peter is also an accomplished painter and author with several books to his name, and is an interesting and thought-provoking speaker. As Peter says, this gig promises to have “a little of everything, music, reminiscences, philosophy…and a bit of Oud!”....
