Anglo-Hungarian Festival - Two Sets: Gabor Bolla & Janos Aved at 606 Club

8:00PM GABOR BOLLA A child prodigy, Gábor was 12 when he won first prize in the National Music Schools' Competition and only 14 when he appeared at the Getxo Jazz Festival in Bilbao. By the time he formed his first quartet in 2003 Gábor, then aged just 15, was already considered a prodigious saxophone talent. Since then he has reached the semi-finals of the World Saxophone Competition twice and has become an international success with performances at the Yatra Jazz Festival in India, the Bucharest Jazz Festival, the Peter & Paul Festival in St Petersburg and the London Jazz Festival as well as winning a variety of awards, including the Hans Koller Prize for the Talent of the Year in Vienna and both the Grand Prix and the Prix du Public at the 2005 Avignon Jazz Festival in France. Now a seasoned international recording and performing artist, he includes work with the likes of David Murray, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin and Roy Hargrove on a hugely impressive CV. A regular visitor to the 606 Club (he first performed here when he was just 14), it’s with great pleasure that we welcome back this fine artist, tonight supported by a not surprisingly top flight Anglo-Hungarian rhythm section of József Balázs-piano, Adam King-bass and Elemér Balázs-drums with Special Guest Steve Fishwick-trumpet. The music is very much in the hard-bop mould of the 50’s and 60’s, so expect accessible, enjoyable straight-ahead jazz with a repertoire that includes standards as well as some of Gábor’s own great originals....

9:45PM JÁNOS ÁVED One of the leading saxophonists of his generation, János Ávéd’s muscular and fluent tenor sax playing has been heard extensively not only in his native Hungary but throughout Europe. Although he graduated from the Jazz Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 2009 János was already a busy musician, performing extensively with a variety of different groups in and around Hungary since 2006. Since graduating his consummate musicianship and thirst for musical challenges have led to him to perform in a variety of different musical settings, from his Jelen Trio, specialising in “free form” through his János Ávéd trios and quartets which are vehicles for his melodic “straight ahead” approach to the Blue Bunny Hammond Band which is very much in the Funk/Groove style. He has performed, not surprisingly, with an impressive selection of the best musicians around, including ex Mike Brecker keyboardist Joey Calderazzo and the cream of Hungarian jazz scene (many of whom have already appeared here at the Club), including the likes of Kálmán Oláh, Elemér Balázs, Gábor Gadó and Nikoletta Szőke. He is currently one of the featured saxophonists with the prestigious European Saxophone Ensemble. Tonight János will be supported by the brilliant UK rhythm section of Jim Watson-piano, Adam King-bass and James Maddren-drums. Highly recommended.
