About

This is an immensely exciting pairing of two of the finest straight-ahead tenor saxophonists, Dave O'Higgins (UK) and Grant Stewart (US) both recognised globally as masters of their craft. Since moving to New York in 1990 Canadian Grant Stewart has established himself as one of the finest straight-ahead saxophonists on the international jazz scene. His cv is immense, his highly creative post-bop tenor sax sound having been heard with numerous iconic jazz musicians, including the likes of Jimmy Cobb, Harold Mabern, Louis Hayes, Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Etta Jones, Brad Mehldau and Harry Connick. Over the years he has worked at virtually every jazz Club in NYC, including Smalls, Lincoln Center, Birdland, SMOKE, The Kitano, The Jazz Standard.... He has performed all over North America and Europe as well as Japan, Brazil, and Taiwan and was also one of the first jazz artists to be invited to play at the historical Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg, Russia. In addition he was a featured artist at the Guggenheim Museum’s Jazz series with his trio, which included legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb. Grant has currently released 16 albums as a leader and was voted “rising star on the tenor” 8 years in a row in the prestigious Downbeat Critic’s Poll. You get the idea, he's very good! Undoubtedly one of this country’s finest modern jazz sax players, Dave O’Higgins has worked with the likes of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Jimmy Smith and Annie Lennox. The winner of a multitude of awards, he has produced 16 albums to date of his own solo material and appeared on numerous sessions and festivals around the world. His current projects include work with one of New York’s leading sax players, Eric Alexander (in a classic two sax “hard bop” quintet performing on both sides of the Atlantic) as well as the Darius Brubeck Quartet, the Gascoyne/O’Higgins Quartet and the Loire Allstars featuring Tristan Maillot, Anita Wardell, Oli Hayhurst and Mike Gorman. Dave is also the writer and arranger of the Two Minds Big Band, which he co-leads with long time associate Pete Wraight. When not performing himself, Dave is a highly regarded jazz educator, teaching saxophone, harmony and improvisation at the London Centre of Contemporary Music (LCCM), and has previously been on the music faculty at renowned institutions including Goldsmith’s College, Leeds College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the Universities of Natal and Cape Town. This promises to be a fantastic night featuring one of the finest UK saxophonists at the top of his game, partnered with one of the finest New York can offer, all supported by an international class rhythm section of Graham Harvey (Stacey Kent) piano, Simon Woolf (Benny Golson) bass and Sebastiaan de Krom (Jamie Cullum), drums. Promises to be an absolute cracker this one, booking highly advised....
