About
An assured and versatile pianist David is one of the few professional jazz musicians who is also a well-established classical performer. An accomplished harpsichordist as well as pianist, David includes work with the likes of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and has toured Europe and South America with the European Baroque Orchestra. An award-winning jazz and classical composer, he has had works performed on BBC Radio 3 as well as performances at the Cheltenham Festival and QEH. As a jazz pianist he has led his own trio since 1995, currently featuring Paul Cavaciuti on drums and Alec Dankworth on bass, with a repertoire that focuses on original compositions by the band, but also includes material as diverse as folk music from Venezuela, East European dance music and Celtic-tinged melodies. Tonight, David and the trio will be bringing their latest fascinating project, “Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band” to the Club. Over to David for a description: “1915: the world in turmoil. In New Orleans, Jelly Roll Morton's experimentation with ragtime and blues signals the dawn of a new creation: jazz! In New York, Russian émigré Irving Berlin is churning out hit after hit; In Paris, Debussy experiments with syncopation and jazz harmony; In Moscow, the death of the great Russian piano-poet, composer and mystic Alexander Scriabin. Bringing these disparate musical strands together the Trio create an amazing tapestry of music from this time: boogie-woogie, tango and Brazilian choro rub shoulders with the eponymous rag, with interpretations of Scriabin's miniatures seen through the prism of popular music of the time, getting the makeover to end all makeovers”. The whole thing sounds quite remarkable and has now been captured on CD, which will be available at this evening’s performance. This promises to be a unique, thoughtful and inventive gig and absolutely not to be missed....
