The award-winning Australian vocalist Anita Wardell is one of those powerful and impressive singers who hail from “down under”. An established and experienced musician, Anita not only performs jazz standards in her own inimitable style but she is also universally accepted as one of the best “scat” singers on the international jazz scene. Invited to appear in New York, she was such a success that she was immediately invited back. Her three CD’s (“Noted” and “Kinda Blues” on the Proper label and “The Road” on Specific) have each received glowing praise, and are a showcase for her interpretative skills and vocal agility. Live, she’s even better, with a winning rapport that further adds to the charm of her performance. Sadly for us Anita returned to Australia in 2018, where in addition to performing is continuing her work as a much-vaunted teacher and educationalist in the position of Jazz Vocal Lecturer at the Elder Conservatorium, part of Adelaide University. Happily however she is back in town on one of her regular visits to London, enabling her to perform here at the Club (where she first sang over 20 years ago). For her 606 show this evening Anita has taken her inspiration from music of American jazz icon Betty Carter, who was also recognised, like Anita, for her mastery of scat singing and improvisation (a style Carter helped to popularise along with Ella, Sarah, and other household names of that era). Accompanying Anita will be her fantastic band of Robin Aspland-piano, Jeremy Brown-bass and Steve Brown-drums. This is proper, hard-driving jazz from one of the great masters of bebop vocals.
