About
Tonight we will be hosting a special night in aid of one of our favourite charities, SMART. Founded in 1985 SMART moved to its present location in Gertrude Street, just around the corner from us here at the Club, in 1993. It’s a drop-in centre whose aim is to support those with all forms of mental illness by providing vocational work and training in a wide variety of subjects and interests, from gardening, IT work and professional cooking (through employment in their excellent café) to art, fitness and of course, music. Every week, under the guidance of musician/teacher Sarah Wilson, a number of the Smart members who are also musicians meet up to rehearse and perform in the Smart Café. Composed of a mix of ex-professionals and talented semi-professionals the band performs a mix of popular songs, jazz and blues. It will be a selection of musicians from this band who, directed by Sarah, will be performing for the first set this evening under the self-titled name, Mad In Chelsea! And, adding some spice and sophistication to the evening, the second set will feature the brilliant singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist George Montague. Still in his mid twenties, this Award-winning musician has already made quite an impact on the UK music scene. Initially starting out as a double bassist, he now includes piano, guitar, ukulele and drums amongst the many instruments he plays and performs on. A singer/songwriter of style and sophistication, his debut album "Have you met George", released in 2012, was met with considerable acclaim and his latest album, "Curiouser and Curiouser", which has just been released has, with its signature blend of rock, soul, funk and pop, continued to establish this excellent artist as a force to be reckoned with. He supported Tim Minchin at The Eden Project as part of London’s Cultural Olympiad and includes appearances at the likes of the London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham, Petworth, Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Henley Festivals. With over 5 million unique views on his personal YouTube channel you get the idea, he's very good, and it is with great pleasure that we welcome him to the 606 Club tonight in support of this very worthy charity. The 606 Club has a particularly long and fruitful association with Smart, who we think do a great job with very little funding, so do make it down to support this wonderful and hard working charity and have a great night…all at the same time! Booking advised....
