Always one of the highlights of the year, we are delighted to welcome back the dynamic Keith Nichols to work with Academy Big Band. For this concert Keith and the band tell the story of Count Basie’s rise to prominence through the territory bands from the 1920s and early 30s, including music from Bennie Moten, Walter Page’s Blue Devils, Andy Kirk’s Twelve Clouds of Joy and Jay McShann’s Orchestra. The second half of the concert will tell the story of Count Basie’s early days in Kansas City through the remainder of the 1930s, concluding with some pieces from the iconic 1957 album, The Atomic Mr Basie....
