About
Gareth Williams has unquestionably established himself as one of the countryโs leading modern jazz pianists. A fiery and creative player, his remarkable talent has been seen with an impressive array of world-class artists, from Jazz/Hip Hop band โUs3โ through to internationally-renowned jazz musicians such as Joe Lovano, George Coleman and Jim Mullen. MD for iconic UK vocalist Claire Martin, Gareth has been featured at the Club on many occasions, most notably in his regular appearances with iconic US sax star Jerry Bergonzi. Described as โone of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent timesโ multi-award winning saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes has made quite an impact in the relatively short time she has been on the UK jazz scene. Following her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, in 2008 she won the Peter Whittingham Development Award that allowed her to form her first ensemble, Tangent followed by her eponymously named CD debut on Basho Records in 2010. Her second album on Basho was released in 2012 and was followed by a UK tour that featured the likes of Gwilym Simcock, Mike Walker and Martin France. At the same time her โIris Nonetโ was short-listed for the 2013 BASCA British Composer Awards. Trish curates her own festival Emulsion, the entire festival being broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and her third album, โPocket Compassโ, was launched at the EFG London Jazz Festival 2014 alongside the premiere of her first BBC commission โThe Fox the Parakeet & The Chestnutโ, an event which was the culmination of her two years as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. Other performance highlights include Celtic Connections 2014, the โUnder Your Wingโ project featuring Norma Winstone and BBC Radio 3 Free-Thinking Festival 2014 with the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Gareth and Trish have worked together a few times recently and so decided to create a more formal collaboration in the โGlow Quartetโ. The idea behind the band is to bring generations and styles of musicians/music together, playing arrangements of standards and originals from the two of them. As Gareth describes it, โโฆitโs an interactive band, taking risks, taking the good stuff from both more traditional improvised music and contemporary ideasโ. Also featured with the quartet will be the exceptional rhythm section of Calum Gourlay-bass and Martin France-drums....
