About

One of the world’s leading musicians, New York-based acoustic bass player Harvie S has forged a remarkable career over the last 35 years. An award-winning performer, composer, producer, bandleader and educator Harvie’s cv reads like a “who’s who” of modern jazz, including work with the likes of Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Gil Evans, Tony Bennett, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Joe Lovano and Dave Leibman. He can be heard on over four hundred CDs as a sideman, 20 as a leader and another fifteen as a co-leader with such greats as James Brown, Chick Corea, John Scofield, Grover Washington Jr and Pat Martino. In the UK he is probably best known for the groundbreaking duo with iconic vocalist Sheila Jordan, with which he toured the world. In the mid 90’s Harvie turned his searing talent to the study of Afro-Cuban music which he now incorporates into his gigs. The result is a wonderful music that he describes as “Jazz on the Latin side - combining the melodic and harmonic sophistication of jazz with the extraordinary rhythmic intensity of Latin music”. In addition to his performance career Harvie is an active educator and is Professor of Bass Studies at The Manhattan School of Music as well as guest lecturer at The Cologne Hochschule, Berklee College of Music, the Eisler School in Berlin, The Eastman School of Music plus numerous colleges and universities worldwide. Harvie was selected as a Jazz Ambassador for the United States and toured throughout Europe and Southeast Asia in this honoured capacity. He has been a guest on NPRs All Things Considered and Fresh Air and his career has been documented in Leonard Feather’s Encyclopedia of Jazz, the Grove Dictionary of Jazz and the All Music Guide. His Latest CD “Plucky Strum” teams him with extraordinary guitarist Sheryl Bailey in a powerful duo with acoustic bass and acoustic guitar that has received rave reviews. Appearing with Harvie this evening will be an ace UK band featuring Giorgio Serci-guitar, Paul Booth-sax and Enzo Zirilli-drums. It is with enormous pleasure that we welcome this giant of the Bass to the Club this evening. ...
