Art was a long time partner of the great Stan Tracey, and started his career in the blues boom of the early 60s, with the likes of Jack Bruce and Alexis Korner.

During this period he also worked with Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s and early 70s his musical direction shifted towards jazz and he played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier. In 1974 he began a long and particularly fruitful association with Tracey, which continued into the 90s.

Art toured the world fronting Stan Tracey's quartet for 20 years and has been featured with virtually everyone on the UK jazz scene. In addition, he has played alongside American legends including Philly Joe Jones, George Coleman, Red Rodney, Nat Adderley, Arturo Sandoval, Scott Hamilton...the list goes on and on! Outside the jazz scene, he has accompanied such diverse artists as Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Chuck Berry, and even Bing Crosby!
