James Barralet is a classically trained cellist with a career that includes appearances at Wigmore Hall, but who is also an adept improviser, bringing an highly cultured tone and technical ability. Noel Taylor and Steve Beresford have played together in small ensembles on several occasions, including The Vortex and at the ‘di COSE’ festival series in Rome. The tonal combination of clarinet and piano with James should be something of a sumptuous treat, but which direction the music will take with the impishly creative sensibility of Steve Beresford on board is a far more elusive proposition. ...

As if this combination of sounds isn’t enough for one night, the haunting Shakuhachi and other exotic wind instruments to which Clive Bell brings a level virtuosity rarely heard outside Japan will feature alongside the Tiplé of John Garcia Rueda and the percussion of Will Connor. The Tiplé in John’s hands is an extraordinarily delicate 12 stringed Columbian folk guitar with a tinkling timbre that is capable of moving, in an instant, from the purely ethereal to the stridently buoyant. Visa Kuoppala is fascinated with the poetic, emotional and atmospheric qualities of enigmatic or ambiguous sounds.
