Gilad Atzmon's Spirit Of Coltrane at Colchester Arts Centre Jazz Club

A regular Arts Centre guest since 2009, virtuoso reeds man Gilad Atzmon has been wowing listeners with his constant flow of ideas and whirlwind approach, which is both dynamic, charismatic, impassioned and at times overwhelming.

Born in Israel but based in the UK for more than 20 years, Gilad was initially inspired by the work of Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes and, later, Charlie Parker.

Having previously performed here with the Orient House Ensemble and his critically acclaimed Charlie Parker with Strings (subsequently released on CD), this time round Gilad pays tribute to another sax colossus - and one of his primary influences - the late, great John Coltrane, whose albums such as Giant Steps, My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme made him an iconic figure of 20th Century jazz....

As a sideman, Gilad’s a member of the Blockheads and has guested on albums by guitarist Nicolas Meier, bassist Shez Raja and many others. Other high-profile sessions have included work with Sir Paul McCartney, Sinead O’Connor, Robbie Williams and The Waterboys. In 2014 he was the featured saxophonist on Pink Floyd’s new album The Endless River.

A gifted jazz musician to his core, Gilad is joined by regular accompanists Frank Harrison (Piano), Yaron Stavi (Bass) and Chris Higginbottom (Drums).
