About
Award winning Birmingham native Julie Dexter made her first real impact on the jazz scene in the late 1990's as the featured singer with the Courtney Pine band. She toured the world with Courtney, establishing herself in the process as a distinctive and creative talent. On the back of this exposure, and the plaudits that came with it, she decided in 1999 to re-locate to Atlanta, Georgia in the US, where she has lived ever since. She released the highly acclaimed "Peace of Mind" in 2000 followed by "Dexterity" in 2002, both on her own Ketch A Vibe label and both becoming "underground" soul hits, garnering rave reviews in the soul press and selling over 40,000 units between them. Pretty impressive for an independent production. Since then she has gone on to produce a further 5 impressive, articulate and successful recordings, establishing herself in the process as a singer, songwriter and producer of real significance on the international music scene. Julie's musical influences are broad, from jazz artists such as Nancy Wilson and Abbey Lincoln through Reggae icon Bob Marley to popular soul artists such as Omar and Sade. The music she performs encompasses Jazz, Broken Beat, Bossa-Nova, Reggae, Afro-Beat and Soul, all performed with an assurance and musicality that comes from being an artist at the top of her game. Notable moments in Julie's career to date include her single being used by President Barack Obama for his campaign ads and in 2015 being honoured at the Black Women in Jazz Awards with the Afro Caribbean Soul of Jazz Award. Tonight Julie will be performing with one of the finest pianists in the UK, the wonderful Janette Mason. Described as an ‘inspired and inspiring’ keyboard player her versatility has made her a sought-after musician by artists as diverse as Claire Martin and Ian Shaw to legendary singer/songwriter Robert Wyatt and top pop acts Oasis, Suzanne Vega and Seal. These days she divides her time between performing and writing music for Film/TV and is the perfect foil for Julie's sophisticated, Jazz/Soul influenced material. Completing the rhythm section will be Tom Mason on bass and Jack Pollitt on drums. This is a rare chance to hear this terrific singer performing back in the UK and highly recommended....
