John Taylor is widely considered one of Europes most important pianists and composers. He first came to the attention of jazz audiences in the early 1970s with his own sextet, as accompanist to Cleo Laine, and as a member of Ronnie Scotts quintet. In 1977 John formed the trio Azimuth, with Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler.The group was described by Richard Williams as one of the most imaginatively conceived and delicately balanced contemporary chamber-jazz groups. The trio made several recordings for ECM Records and performed in Europe, the USA and Canada. John has worked with the cream of US and European talent including in groups with Jan Garbarek, Enrico Rava, Gil Evans, Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano, as well as performing in duo contexts with Wheeler, Charlie Haden, Tony Coe and Steve Arguelles. Composing projects have included a commission for the English choir Cantamus with Lee Konitz and Steve Arguelles and pieces for the Hannover Radio Orchestra with Stan Sulzmann. Richard Fairhurst has been described by John Fordham in the Guardian as 'one of the UK's most inventive pianists'. He has been a Steinway International Artist since 1998 and in 2000 he was a finalist at the Montreux Jazz Festivals solo piano competition. In 2004 Richard was commissioned as part of the Jerwood Rising Stars programme to write music for a premier performance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. He formed a new sextet and the music was released on the album Standing Tall (Babel). This music won Richard a BBC Jazz Award in the Best New Work category for 2004. His current project Triptych involves a piano trio with the superb Danish bassist Jasper Hoiby and amazing American drummer Chris Vatalaro.
